Coastal Wellness Testosterone Replacement Therapy
At Coastal Wellness, we are dedicated to optimizing our client’s health and noticed a gap in the services provided. To fill the hole and help further our journey to becoming a complete mobile and wellness service, we decided hormone therapy was the way to go.
Testosterone is primarily found in males and is often associated with sex drive; however, it plays a vital role in bone and muscle mass, the way men store fat, and red blood cell production.
The hormone is produced by your body, but production slows after males hit the age of 30. Testosterone levels typically decrease up to 1% per year after the age of 30, which can lead to low testosterone levels, also called low T. The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging reported low T levels in 20% of men over 60 years of age, 30% in men over 70 years and 50% in men over 80 years of age.
This can lead to less energy, weight gain, depression, insomnia, a lower sex drive, moodiness, less body hair, and thinner bones.
Low T levels can also be caused by chemotherapy and radiation, AIDS, kidney disease, alcoholism, and cirrhosis of the liver.
If low T is interfering with your daily life, then it may be time for you to look into testosterone replacement therapy.
Normal Testosterone Levels
The normal level of testosterone varies depending on thyroid function, protein and other factors. The American Urological Association (AUA) states a testosterone level of 300 ng/dL is normal for adult males between the ages of 19 and 30.
For women ages 19 and up, 8 to 60 ng/dl is considered normal, according to the Mayo Clinic.
In both genders, testosterone levels peak around the age of 18 or 19 before declining.
What is Testosterone Replacement Therapy?
When your body is not producing enough testosterone, you can opt to receive it orally, through injections, or with gels or patches on your skin. It can give your body the boost it needs to make you feel like your younger self again, while helping increase muscle mass and sex drive.
Side effects are usually nominal and include oily skin, fluid retention and a decrease in sperm production.
You should talk with your doctor to see if testosterone therapy is right for you before receiving treatment. It is recommended for men with T levels under 300 ng/dl (nanograms per deciliter) and for men with symptoms of low T. Coastal Wellness requires labs and a telemedicine consult to see if you qualify for the program.
Who Can Not Get Testosterone Replacement Therapy?
If you have past medical history of prostate or breast cancer, a nodule on the prostate, a PSA greater than 3 ng/ml, a hematocrit greater than 50%, untreated obstructive sleep apnea, class III or IV heart failure, or severe lower urinary tract symptoms, you may not be a candidate for therapy.
Our testosterone clients at Coastal Wellness will be membership based. Those that qualify will need to present us with a thorough health history and submit to lab testing before receiving testosterone therapy to ensure the treatment is safe for them to take. Follow-up testing will occur once you start weekly treatments.
What Are The Risks Of Testosterone Therapy?
Testosterone therapy is not without risks, which is why we will be thorough in screening individuals who receive it. Testosterone therapy can cause an increased risk in blood clots, infertility, heart problems and getting an enlarged prostate, especially in those with pre-existing conditions.
The Benefits of Testosterone Replacement Therapy
In addition to an increased sex drive and muscle health, maintaining testosterone levels within normal limits can reduce the risk of males developing Alzheimer’s by 26% for each 10 unit increase how the hormone at 2, 5 and 10 years prior to the Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
Men with low T have a risk of developing osteoporosis, as testosterone levels play a critical role in bone mass density. Testosterone replacement therapy can help boost the bone density of men with low T levels.
